The same moisturizer often feels adequate in a humid summer and thin in a heated apartment in January. The formula has not changed, but the air it is working against has.

What a moisturizer is actually doing

Skin loses water continuously through its outer layer, a process measured in labs as transepidermal water loss. A moisturizer works by slowing that loss and by holding water in the surface layers.

Formulas do this with three broad ingredient types. Humectants attract water, emollients fill gaps between surface cells, and occlusives form a film that slows evaporation.

Most products combine all three in different proportions. The proportion, not the price or the marketing, is what determines how a product behaves in a given climate.

Why indoor heating dries the air

Cold outdoor air holds little water vapor. When that air enters a building and is heated, its capacity for moisture rises while the actual moisture content stays the same.

Relative humidity, the measure most people see on a thermostat, is the ratio between the water the air holds and the maximum it could hold. Heating the air lowers that ratio sharply.

The result is that a heated American home in winter can be drier than the outdoor air was, which is why skin complaints cluster in the heating season.

How humectants behave in dry air

A humectant such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid binds water molecules. It does not create water; it moves water toward itself from whatever source is nearest.

In humid air, that source is partly the atmosphere. In very dry air, the nearest available water is in the deeper layers of the skin itself.

A humectant-heavy product applied to dry skin in dry air can therefore feel tight rather than comforting, because it has pulled moisture upward with nothing sealing it in.

Why occlusives carry more weight in winter

Occlusive ingredients, including petrolatum and heavier plant butters, form a physical barrier on the surface. They do not add water but slow the rate at which it escapes.

Layering an occlusive over a humectant gives the drawn-in water somewhere to stay. This is the reason winter routines commonly shift toward creams and ointments rather than lotions.

The trade-off is texture. Heavier films sit visibly on skin and take longer to absorb, which is why the same routine feels unpleasant in July.

Where the limits of a product sit

Persistent cracking, bleeding, itching that disrupts sleep, or patches that do not respond to any moisturizer are not humidity problems and are not solved by changing formulas.

Conditions including eczema, psoriasis and contact dermatitis look like ordinary dryness in their early stages. A board-certified dermatologist is the right person to distinguish them.

Humidity explains why a working product stops working seasonally. It does not explain skin that has never responded, and that distinction is worth making before buying anything else.
