The ingredient list is the most regulated part of beauty packaging and the least read. The conventions governing it are simple enough to make it genuinely useful.

The names are standardised internationally

Ingredients are listed under a shared naming system, which is why the same names appear on products bought in different countries regardless of language.

Plant-derived ingredients appear under their botanical names, which is why a list contains Latin binomials alongside chemical terms.

This standardisation means a list can be compared directly across brands and countries, unlike the marketing text on the front of the pack.

Order reflects concentration, up to a point

Ingredients are listed in descending order of concentration, so the first few entries make up the bulk of the product.

Below a threshold concentration, the ordering requirement no longer applies and remaining ingredients may be listed in any order.

This is why an active ingredient appearing near the end tells you it is present in a small amount but not how small, or where it sits relative to its neighbours.

Small amounts are not automatically insignificant

Many functional ingredients work at very low concentrations, including preservatives, certain peptides and some potent actives.

Others are present at low levels purely so they can be named on the front of the pack, a practice sometimes described as label decoration.

Distinguishing the two requires knowing the concentration at which a given ingredient is understood to work, which the label does not supply.

Some entries hide considerable complexity

Fragrance appears as a single entry despite potentially representing a large number of individual materials, which are treated as proprietary composition.

Specific fragrance allergens must be declared separately once they exceed set levels, which is why some lists end with a run of unfamiliar chemical names.

Colourants are often listed at the end under index numbers, and products sold in multiple shades may list every colourant used across the range.

Compound trade ingredients behave similarly, since a supplier's blend can appear as several separate entries whose individual proportions are not recoverable from the list.

What the list will not tell you

Ingredient lists say nothing about the physical form of a product, and texture, delivery system and stability all affect performance independently of composition.

They also say nothing about the quality or purity of a given raw material, which can vary considerably between suppliers under the same name.

The list is therefore best used to identify what is present and to check for known personal triggers, rather than to predict how a formula will perform.
