The skin barrier is discussed constantly in beauty writing and rarely described physically. It is a specific structure, and knowing its shape explains what damages it.
The structure is bricks and mortar
The outermost layer is made of flattened cells that have lost their nuclei. They are effectively dead, packed tightly, and layered many cells deep across the whole surface.
Between them sits a mixture of ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids arranged in sheets. That mixture is the mortar, and it is what makes the layer watertight.
Neither element works alone. Cells without the lipid matrix leak, and lipids without an organised cell structure have nothing to seal.
What the barrier is holding in
The primary job is keeping water inside the body. Skin loses moisture continuously to the air, and the barrier determines how fast that loss happens.
Measuring that rate is the standard laboratory method for assessing barrier function. A higher loss rate indicates a more permeable, less intact surface.
The same structure keeps things out. Irritants, allergens and microorganisms encounter a dense, oily layer that most of them cannot cross efficiently.
How it becomes compromised
Anything that dissolves lipids weakens it, which covers strong detergents, solvents and prolonged hot water. Repetition matters more than any single exposure.
Over-exfoliation removes cells faster than they are replaced, thinning the layer. Physical scrubbing, acids and retinoids can all contribute when used together or too often.
Environmental conditions add to it. Cold dry air and low indoor humidity both increase the rate at which water leaves the skin, independent of any product.
Why damaged skin behaves unpredictably
A permeable barrier lets ingredients penetrate further and faster than intended. Products that were previously comfortable begin to sting because they are reaching deeper.
Water loss increases at the same time, so skin is dry despite the same routine, and moisturiser appears to stop working when it is simply outpaced.
Redness and sensitivity follow, since the immune system in the skin is now meeting substances it does not normally encounter at that depth.
How recovery actually works
Repair depends on the skin rebuilding its lipid matrix, which takes time measured in weeks rather than days. There is no way to complete it instantly.
Reducing exposure is the practical route: fewer actives, gentler cleansing, and occlusive or lipid-containing moisturisers that slow water loss while the structure rebuilds.
Persistent or severe barrier problems can signal an underlying condition such as eczema or dermatitis, which needs assessment rather than a change of moisturiser.
