Paired photographs are the most persuasive format in beauty marketing and among the least reliable. Several variables that are easy to change affect the image more than any formula does.
Lighting does most of the work
Skin texture is visible only because light strikes it at an angle and casts small shadows in every pore and line, which the eye reads as roughness.
Moving the light source to the front flattens those shadows and removes most visible texture instantly, with no change to the skin itself.
Side lighting does the reverse, which is why a before image is frequently lit harshly from an angle and an after image lit softly from the front.
Angle and expression reshape the face
A camera held slightly below the face lengthens the jaw and emphasises anything sagging, while one held above tightens the same features.
Relaxing the face fully allows lines to settle, whereas a slight lift of the brows and cheeks smooths the forehead and under-eye area noticeably.
Neither change requires deliberate deception, and photographers taking an after image naturally encourage a more flattering pose.
Preparation differs between the two images
An after photograph is frequently taken with clean, freshly moisturised skin, which is temporarily plumper and reflects light more evenly.
Hair, makeup, hydration and time of day all shift appearance, and none of them is usually controlled between the two shots.
Simply drinking water and sleeping well changes how skin photographs, so a comparison taken weeks apart captures far more than a product's effect.
Processing is difficult to detect
Adjusting contrast, warmth and clarity changes how texture and tone appear, and these adjustments are routine in any commercial image.
Smoothing tools applied lightly are essentially invisible in a small image, particularly one viewed on a phone screen.
Image compression on social platforms independently reduces fine detail, which flatters the after image regardless of what anyone intended.
Camera choice contributes as well, since different lenses and sensors render skin texture and colour differently, and a comparison shot on two devices is not a comparison at all.
What a more credible comparison looks like
Consistency is the signal worth looking for: the same lighting setup, same angle, same distance, same expression and no makeup in either frame.
Photographs taken with standardised imaging equipment, as used in clinical assessment, control these variables deliberately and are far harder to influence.
Absent that, a comparison is best read as an illustration of what a product is claiming rather than as evidence that it achieved it.
