A new hair color loses more intensity in its first two weeks than in the following two months. The curve is steep at the start for reasons rooted in where the dye sits.

How dye gets inside the strand

Permanent color works by swelling the cuticle with an alkaline agent, allowing small colorless precursors to enter the cortex where they react and form larger pigment molecules.

Those larger molecules are too big to leave easily through a closed cuticle, which is what makes permanent color permanent in the deeper layers.

Semi-permanent and direct dyes skip the reaction. They deposit ready-made pigment that clings to the surface and the outer cortex without penetrating as far.

Why the earliest washes take the most

Not all deposited pigment ends up locked in the cortex. A meaningful share sits on the cuticle surface or in the outermost layers after the service.

That surface fraction is loosely held and is removed by the first few shampoos. Once it is gone, the remaining color is the portion that penetrated properly.

The cuticle also takes time to close fully after processing, so early washes meet a more open structure than later ones do.

How water temperature and surfactants act

Hot water raises the cuticle scales, widening the gaps through which pigment can escape. Cooler rinses keep those scales flatter against the strand.

Strong surfactants, particularly clarifying formulas, strip surface oils and carry loose pigment with them. Color-safe shampoos generally use milder, lower-charge cleansing systems.

Swimming pools add chlorine, which oxidizes pigment directly, and copper in some water supplies can shift blonde and gray-covering shades toward green.

Why some shades fade faster than others

Red pigment molecules are among the largest used in hair color, which makes them harder to push into the cortex and easier to wash back out.

Blue and violet tones used to neutralize brass in blonde hair are deposited in small quantities by design, so their loss becomes visible quickly.

Highly porous hair, whether from prior lightening or heat, holds any pigment less well because the cuticle no longer forms a tight seal.

What ultraviolet light does separately

Sunlight breaks apart both natural melanin and artificial pigment through oxidation. This proceeds regardless of washing and is cumulative over a summer.

It affects the hair's own color as well, which is why untreated hair lightens over months outdoors without any product involved.

Scalp reactions to color, including burning, blistering or swelling, are a matter for a physician. Patch testing before a service exists for that reason and is not optional in most salons.
