A perfume kept on a sunny windowsill degrades far faster than the same bottle kept in a drawer. The chemistry involved is straightforward and largely preventable.

Aromatic molecules are chemically fragile

The compounds that produce scent are relatively delicate organic molecules, and many contain structures that react readily with oxygen.

Oxidation changes their shape, and a changed molecule produces a different smell or no smell at all. The alteration is permanent.

This is why an old fragrance often smells sour or metallic at the opening while the base remains closer to its original character.

Heat accelerates every reaction

Chemical reactions proceed faster at higher temperature, so warmth speeds up oxidation and any other degradation already under way.

Bathrooms are therefore among the worst storage locations despite being the most common, because temperature and humidity both swing sharply with every shower.

A consistently cool location matters more than a specifically cold one, since repeated cycling between temperatures does its own damage.

Ultraviolet light breaks bonds directly

Ultraviolet radiation carries enough energy to break chemical bonds, splitting molecules into fragments that smell different from the original.

Citrus materials are particularly vulnerable, which is why fresh compositions tend to show their age faster than deep resinous ones.

Coloured and opaque bottles exist partly for this reason, though a clear bottle in a closed box is protected just as effectively.

Indirect daylight is enough to matter over months, so a bottle displayed on an open shelf near a window is exposed continuously even without direct sun falling on it.

Air in the bottle matters as much

Each spray draws air into the bottle to replace the liquid removed, so a half-empty bottle contains a substantial volume of oxygen.

A bottle used slowly over years therefore accumulates more oxidative exposure than one of the same age that was used quickly.

Atomiser bottles perform better than splash bottles for this reason, since removing the stopper repeatedly exchanges far more air with the room.

What degradation looks like

The visible signs are a darkening of the liquid and sometimes a slight cloudiness, though colour change alone does not always mean the scent has turned.

The reliable indicator is the opening, since the lightest and most fragile materials degrade first and the top notes lose definition before anything else.

Fragrance does not spoil in a way that makes it unsafe, but a degraded composition cannot be restored, so storage is the only meaningful intervention.
