Products promising to mend split ends are describing a cosmetic effect rather than a repair. The reason is simple biology, and it sets a hard limit on what any formula can do.

Hair is not living tissue

Cells divide in the follicle beneath the skin, then fill with keratin and die as they are pushed upward. What emerges from the scalp is already dead material.

There is no blood supply, no cell division and no metabolic activity along the visible strand. Nothing in it can respond to damage the way skin does.

This is why a cut hair does not hurt and why damage anywhere along the length is permanent until the section is removed and replaced by new growth.

How a split actually forms

The cuticle scales protecting the strand wear away gradually through brushing, washing, heat and friction against clothing and pillows.

Once the cuticle is gone at a point, the inner cortex is exposed. The cortex is a bundle of protein fibres running along the length of the hair.

Without the outer sheath holding them together, those fibres separate under ordinary stress, and the split runs upward along the strand rather than staying at the tip.

What repair products are doing

Sealing products use polymers, silicones or oils that bridge the gap physically, gluing the separated fibres together and smoothing the surface.

The effect is real and visible. The split becomes far less noticeable and the hair feels smoother, because the coating restores an even reflective surface.

It is also temporary. The binding agent washes out, and no protein has been reconnected, so the split reappears in the same place after cleansing.

Why leaving it makes things worse

A split does not remain at the end. Every brush stroke and every wash applies force along the strand, and the separation travels further up.

Hair above the split then becomes thinner and weaker, which is why long hair with untrimmed ends progressively loses density towards the bottom.

Splits also tangle with each other, increasing the mechanical force needed to comb through and creating new damage points along the way.

Why prevention is the only real lever

The practical response is removing the damaged section before it propagates and reducing the causes of cuticle wear along the length.

That means lower heat, less aggressive detangling, gentler drying and protecting the ends from friction, since the ends are the oldest and most worn part of the strand.

Bond-building treatments work at a different level, addressing broken internal bonds in chemically processed hair, and they do not reassemble a fibre that has already split apart.
