Skin ageing is usually discussed as a single process driven by time. It is better understood as two processes, and the larger one is entirely environmental.

Two processes run in parallel

Intrinsic ageing is the slow change that would happen regardless of environment, driven by declining cell activity and reduced production of structural proteins.

Extrinsic ageing is damage accumulated from outside, and ultraviolet radiation is by a wide margin the largest contributor among those external factors.

The two look different. Intrinsically aged skin is thinner, drier and finely lined, while sun-damaged skin is thickened, coarse and irregularly pigmented.

The comparison is available on every body

Skin on the inner upper arm or the buttock has the same chronological age as skin on the face and hands but a fraction of the exposure.

The difference in texture, tone and pigmentation between those areas on the same person is a direct measure of accumulated ultraviolet damage.

This comparison is the clearest available demonstration that most visible ageing is not a function of time passing alone.

Different wavelengths do different damage

Shorter ultraviolet wavelengths are absorbed mainly in the outer layers and are responsible for sunburn and much direct damage to cellular material.

Longer wavelengths penetrate further into the dermis, where they generate reactive molecules that degrade collagen and elastin over years of exposure.

Because the longer wavelengths pass through window glass and are present throughout daylight hours regardless of weather, exposure is far more continuous than sunburn history suggests.

Damage accumulates without symptoms

Sunburn is an acute inflammatory response and is therefore noticeable, but the changes underlying photoageing happen without any sensation at all.

Pigment changes and textural damage become visible years or decades after the exposure that caused them, which weakens the connection in most people's reasoning.

The absence of immediate feedback is the main reason protection is applied inconsistently, particularly during ordinary days rather than obvious sun exposure.

Exposure also accumulates in short unremarkable stretches, such as walking between buildings or sitting beside a window, which are never recorded as sun exposure by the person receiving them.

What protection actually changes

Reducing exposure slows the rate of further damage, and skin has some capacity to repair when the ongoing load is lowered.

Existing structural damage does not simply reverse, though pigmentation and surface texture can improve substantially with consistent protection over long periods.

Any new, changing or non-healing mark on sun-exposed skin belongs with a clinician rather than with a skincare routine, since the same exposure carries other risks.
