Fragrance counters hand out paper blotters because they are cheap and let a shopper compare several scents quickly. The surface is also the reason the comparison is unreliable.
What a blotter is designed to do
A blotter is a strip of absorbent, unscented paper. It holds a small quantity of fragrance and presents a large surface area to the air.
Perfumers use them to evaluate a composition without the interference of skin, which is genuinely useful when the goal is judging the formula itself.
The strip is chemically inert and stays at room temperature. Neither of those conditions applies to the place the fragrance will actually be worn.
Why skin temperature changes evaporation
Skin sits several degrees above room temperature, and warmth raises the vapor pressure of every molecule in the mixture.
Higher temperature accelerates the whole sequence, so notes that unfold over an hour on paper may pass in twenty minutes on the wrist.
Areas near arteries are warmer still, which is why pulse points project more strongly and also why they burn through the opening notes faster.
How skin oil holds heavy molecules
Sebum is an oily film, and the heavier fragrance materials dissolve into it. That reservoir releases them slowly over hours.
Paper offers no such reservoir. Base notes on a blotter sit on fibers and evaporate on a schedule set by air movement alone.
This is the main reason a fragrance that seemed to disappear on paper can last most of a day on skin, and the reverse.
Why alcohol distorts the first minutes
Most fragrances are dissolved in ethanol, which evaporates quickly and carries a sharp smell of its own during that time.
Sniffing a blotter immediately gives a reading dominated by solvent rather than composition, which is why counters advise waiting before evaluating.
Comparing several blotters in quick succession compounds the problem, since olfactory receptors adapt within seconds and a fourth strip is judged by a fatigued nose.
What a useful test looks like
Testing on skin, one or two fragrances at a time, and returning to the same spot after several hours reveals the part of the fragrance that will be worn longest.
Paper remains the right tool for a first pass, narrowing many options to a few, before any of them go on skin.
Redness, itching or burning at the application site is a reaction rather than a preference, and repeated skin responses to fragrance are worth taking to a dermatologist.
