Why the camera flattens texture

Frontal, diffuse light minimizes the shadows that make pores, fine lines and dry patches visible. Those features register as much less prominent on camera than in a mirror.

Lens choice contributes as well, since a longer focal length compresses facial depth and changes the apparent relationship between features.

What the mirror does differently

Checking a finished face in the light it will be seen in is a more useful comparison than checking it against the video's appearance.
